edited by Duane D. Borchers, Sr.
BK-025 $35.00 (Foreign; $65.00)(8
1/2" x 11",
soft cover book of engineering
drawings, 112 pages)
The annual report from the Bureau of Steam Engineering to
the Secretary of the Navy, John D. Long, is a fascinating study of the
performance and problems of the vessels involved in the Spanish-American War.
Naval units had difficulty staying on station for a multitude
of reasons. Chief among them was the long distances traveled to replenish coal.
Other reasons were the scarcity of water for the thirsty boilers, equipment
breakdowns, lack of adequate repair facilities and personnel training.
This report adjectively covers the pros and cons of the
state of the U.S. Navy. It's recommendations for the resolution to the problems of a modern
global navy were taken to heart by the
U.S. Congress and the result was the foundation of the future U.S. steam Navy.
