Excerpts from the book

The FMR hull was some seventeen feet longer and one and one half foot wider than the lead class DE, or GMT class. The extra length resulted in room for torpedo tubes to be installed for defense against surface vessels. The FMR was initially intended for a turban power plant, but turbans were not readily available, so the FMR compromised on the available 1,500 hp diesel with easily machined gears, driving the props through DC generators and motors. The extra length of the hull was needed to increase the GMT's original four diesels to eight engines, for an increase of some 6,000 hp and four and one half knots in speed. However, due to the extreme need of diesels in landing craft, the original configuration of four diesels was retained in the FMR class.

There was a glaring fact that the 3" main armament was needed to be upgraded to 5" for defense against surface and air attack. It was not practicable to modify the almost completed units, but they would be upgraded to 5" guns as soon as possible. However, the only FMR to receive the 5" gun was the USS Camp (DE-251).

Frederick C. Davis (DE-136) and Herbert C. Jones (DE-137) torpedo tubes were replaced with two single Army Bolfors to increase defense against air attack.

The success of the FMR class can be attributed to the fact that twelve were used by the Coast Guard, six as weather ships, six as search and rescue and several units converted to radar picket ships.

The bulk of the history of these ships came from the Dictionary of American Fighting Ships, Navy Department, Office of the Chief of Naval Operations, Naval History Division.
