Marine Captain Richard Eugene Fleming was born on November 2, 1917 in St. Paul, Minnesota. Fleming was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor for his extraordinary heroism and courage in the Battle of Midway, during which he led an attack on a Japanese carrier June 4, 1942 and was killed while attacking another carrier June 5.
USS Fleming (DE-32), was built by Mare Island Navy Yard and commissioned September 18, 1943.
During World War II she provided escort and patrol duties to Makin, Majro, Funafuti, Kwajalein, Orote, Tinian, Eniwetok and Saipan. On February 5, 1944 she destroyed three Japanese mines off Betio anchorage, Tarawa Atoll with gunfire. While escorting two tankers enroute from Ulithi to Eniwetok, Fleming made a radar contact and began five hedgehog and depth charge attacks with which she sank the Japanese submarine I-362, at Lat. 12ø08'N, Long. 154ø26'E, January 14, 1945.
March 21, 1945 she departed Ulithi with an escort carrier support group for the invasion of Okinawa. During the action at Okinawa, she shot down two Japanese aircraft which attacked her on May 20. Five days later she rescued twenty survivors of Bates (APD-47) which was sinking from two kamikaze hits and eleven survivors from LSM-135. With the Bates burning, Fleming was at General Quarters and on high alert, as it was expected the smoke would attract more Japanese aircraft. Ships Cook, John (Hap) Holladay, Jr. dived into the water and rescued an injured and struggling sailor from the Bates. John Holladay, Jr. never received recognization for his heroism, (this author does not know why).
She received four battle stars for WW-II service.
Fleming was sold January 29, 1948

Commander Walter William Gilmore was born on February 10, 1895 in Williamsport, Pennsylvania. He was killed in action while aboard the doomed Lexington (CV-2), during the Battle of the Coral Sea.
USS Gilmore (DE-18), initially designated for Britain as HMS Halder, was built by the Mare Island Naval Yard. She was taken over for American duties and commissioned April 17, 1943.
She was initially assigned escort duty in Alaskan waters. On April 25, 1944 she attacked and sank Japanese submarine I-180 off Alaska. Gilmore was transferred to the Pacific where she became flagship of Escort Division 14 and participated in the landings at Iwo Jima.
She received one battle star for WW-II service.
Gilmore was scrapped February 1, 1947.
