USS Shea (DM-30), Sumner Destroyer Minelayer
Stock Number: YKM-35109 Price: $129.95
The USS Shea was originally commissioned as (DD-750), but was quickly converted to a Destroyer-Minelayer due to a urgent need for high-speed DM ships. The conversion involved adding mine rails to the port and starboard walkways of the ship with ramps installed on the stern to assist the mine to clear the stern of the ship. The typical Sumner Class DM carried 84 mines on the deck ready to deploy in the combat area. USS Shea was deployed to the Pacific theater and saw action in Okinawa. USS Shea fell victim to one of the few successful attack by a Japanese "Baka" flying bomb and was extensively damaged in the attack.
The Yankee Modelworks kit of USS Shea (DM-30), depicts the ship as she was in mid-1945 with the later style bridge, upgraded AA fit, and a complete set of mine rails and mines. The hull is a single piece so you will not need to sand and fill the waterline. The ship comes with resin, white-metal fittings, and a extensive photo-etch brass fret. The USS Shea kit also comes with a second brass fret containing the mine rails and turntables. Of course, the ship would not be complete without a set of mines which are cast in resin.
